BA2012 Pop Up Restaurant

Gearing up for the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games, airline partner British Airways launched a "pop up" restaurant in Shoreditch as a tribute to their Great Britons programme, a programme that highlights various artistic talents in film, food and art within Britain.  The shell of an airline was built inside an otherwise discreet warehouse and all diners over the two evening seatings, had First Class accommodations!

On to the food... culinary winner of the Great Britons programme, was Michelin star chef Simon Hulstone who hails from The Elephant Restaurant in Torquay, Devon.  Mentoring under famed chef Heston Blumenthal, the menu for the three course seating took inspiration from the airline's menus dating back to 1948, the last time the Olympics were held in London.  Everything was "flight friendly" and as you see the images of our various courses, its easy to see how one can get accustomed to First Class!

Salad of golden beetroot, peppered goats curd, micro watercress and an elderflower dressing

Braised British beef, grain mustard and horseradish mash, confit of young carrots and hispi cabbage
Sustainably sourced fish pie with a warm tartare sauce

Lemon curd cheesecake with a raspberry and basil compote
Chilled chocolate fondant with a salted caramel centre, roasted hazelnuts and sugar tuile
A little photo op with Chef Hulstone
A happy crowd, Lindsay, Mr. O and our host for the evening, Sir Christian Steigler.

All in all, a lovely, entertaining evening.  The food was spectacular, the service impeccable ...now if only we could have earned some miles!
