Winter Blooms

We're well into winter here in New York City and it's always after Christmas that I long for the warm days of summer.

I think this week, I'm going to share some of my "visual" summer ...a few things to help us all hang on until sunnier days arrive!

What better way to start than with beautiful blooms made of porcelain!

We can thank Madame de Pompadour for this lovely tradition as she would fill her conservatory with porcelain blossoms during the winter months.

These lovely blossoms are just a phone call away as Vladimir Kanevsky, who immigrated from the Soviet Union in 1989, has quite the artistry within his New York Studio...

Lovely indeed!

Favorite Find Friday:Haoshi Design Studio

Perhaps it's all the snow, perhaps its the reflection of time that comes at the beginning of each new year, but this clock from Haoshi Design Studio caught my eye!

"Haoshi" which means good things in Chinese, brings to us a white resin clock in the form of a whimsical, old fashioned merry-go-round.  A family marks the passage of time...the mother is the minute hand, the boy on the horse is the second hand and the father is the hour hand and each figure twirls pas the numbers marked on each pillar....what a delight!

From The White House to Your House: Michael Smith

The American public became much more familiar with LA based interior designer Michael Smith when Smith was awarded the redecoration of the White House by President Obama...

View of the Oval Office
I've long admired Smith's work for his use of materials, textures, color and mixing the old with the new...

Bring some of Michael Smith's "eye" and talent to your home with these various interior products...

New York City's Vandaag

As we jump into 2011, a restaurant that will be at the top of my list to try is Vandaag.

Not only does the Frisian sugar bread with strawberries and chocolate mint catch my eye, but the Nordic inspired interior with streamlined wood furniture and color accents of blue and yellow, make this venue too tempting for Saturday Brunch!

David Linley

As this London based designer and furniture maker (and yes, he is the Queen's nephew) goes into their 25th year, I thought I would share a few of my favorite Linley pieces:

Linley is also known for miniature wood boxes that work as jewelry boxes or humidors.  While working with Charlotte Moss, I had the pleasure of working with Linley to construct a box designed after the New York Library.  The process includes choosing the piece of architecture, taking many photographs to capture all the details, conceptual sketches including dimensions and wood finishes, and finally the finished product!  While I don't have images of the New York Library, below are a few spectacular examples of the detailed craftsmanship and use-ability of the piece.  Enjoy!
